Nutritious latkan fruit is small in size and contains various minerals, including potassium, calcium, chromium, and magnesium. These ingredients are very useful to keep the body healthy. In addition, iron is especially useful for blood and bone formation. The scientific name of Latkan is Baccaurea motleyana, it is sweet. People know Latkan as Nana.
This fruit is very familiar in Bangladesh as well as northern India, as "Bubi" or "Bubi". Moreover, local people call it as "Latka", "Anshfal," etc. The fruit is available in Tripura, adjacent to the Bangladesh region. This fruit is sweet, but the tree in a shady place has a sour taste. The fruit matures during the rainy season, like the month of Ashar Shravan. In the Rath Yatra festival of Ashar, bananas are part of "Harirlut" (the distribution of fruits), along with pineapple, coconut, and "Bubi," one of the fruits of Harirlut.
Description of the Latkan Tree:
The nutritious latkan fruit tree is 9–12 m tall, its stems are beet, and its upper part is bushy. The farmers separates the male and female trees to get more fruits from the tree; so there are different types of yellow flowers, and both types of flowers have individual fragrances. Usually, the fruit is two to five cm in size, and is held in bunches. The color of the fruit is yellow. The result is 2–5 seeds; the seeds have a succulent edible part attached to them, which has a sour or sweet taste depending on the variety. The consumers can eat this fruit in various ways, such as directly, with curry, or made into jams. Its bark is used for dyeing, which is used for dyeing silk yarn. It grows well in shady places.
Where the Latkan Tree Grows Well:
Lotkan was once on the list of unconventional fruits in Bangladesh. Nowadays, its commercial production is going on on a large scale. With the increase in the cultivation of improved varieties of succulent Latkan, its popularity has also increased considerably. Lotkan yield is higher in Narsingdi of this country. Apart from this, Latkan is being cultivated on a commercial basis in Sylhet, Netrokona, Mymensingh, Tangail, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, and Gazipur. Latkan from Bangladesh is also exported abroad. Latkan contains amino acids and enzymes that help in bodybuilding and cell health.
In both East Bengal and West Bengal, Latkan is deeply involved in the Rath Yatra. On the day of Rath Yatra and the day of Ulta Rath, it is customary to buy Latkan. After the partition of India and the independence of Bangladesh in 1947 and 1971, respectively, the Hindus of East Bengal migrated to different parts of India. As a result, the East Bengal trend spread to different parts of India as well. In the same way, the Bengalis of India have a lot of influence in the area inhabited by East Bengal. Lotkon grows well in Dhamrai and Tangail chariots of Bangladesh. In India too, lotcon is sold on the day of chariot at Kochbihar, Navadwip, etc.
